Humanitarian Aid.

In conflict and disaster areas, roads are often difficult to access. Providing aid by car, truck, or rail is often impossible or too slow. However, in such challenging situations, help is urgently needed. This is where aviation plays a crucial role.

Rapid Assistance from the Air

In natural disasters, armed conflicts, and similar situations, swift action is often required. Relief supplies such as medicines, food, drinking water, or tents must reach the affected areas as quickly as possible. Since trucks cannot access many areas and ships cannot arrive fast enough, air transport is essential for humanitarian aid in many crisis regions. Over long distances, there is no faster means of transport than the aircraft.

In addition to intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations, aviation companies also play a significant role in supplying affected people in disaster areas. They bring aid workers into crisis zones, evacuate people, and transport urgently needed relief supplies.

Humanitarian Aid Program of the United Nations

In conflict or disaster zones that are too dangerous for civil aviation to operate, humanitarian flights are conducted through programs such as the United Nations Humanitarian Air Service. Civil airlines and airports are also integrated into the relief network. They typically work closely with organizations such as Wings of Help (Luftfahrt ohne Grenzen) or the Red Cross. As part of these collaborations, they carry out passenger and cargo flights – both in immediate crisis situations and during the reconstruction phase.

Collaboration with Aid Organizations

Lufthansa Cargo

Lufthansa Cargo forms the logistical backbone for many aid organizations. The partnership with the German Red Cross enables the rapid transport of medical supplies, water purification systems, and other relief goods.

Disaster Response Team (DRT)

The Disaster Response Team (DRT) of the DHL Group coordinates international relief deliveries in crisis situations. Working closely with the international community, the teams manage logistics at airports – from unloading to inventorying and delivering the relief goods to aid organizations in the disaster area.

Condor supports the organization Wings of Help (Luftfahrt ohne Grenzen) with humanitarian flights – shortly after an earthquake in Haiti, they delivered urgently needed relief supplies such as medicines, tents, blankets, and baby food to the Haitian capital, from where the supplies were further distributed to the disaster areas.

Medical Aid Project Cargo Human Care

The Cargo Human Care project was born out of collaboration between Lufthansa Cargo employees and doctors from all over Germany. It brings medical relief supplies to where they are urgently needed. The project is supported by Lufthansa Cargo and Fraport, among others.
